Community Commitment
"A Tale of Two Passions"
Milt Younger
Work, charitable and political activities have pretty much defined my
life. I feel very strongly that we each have a responsibility to give
back to our community. Education and music are two of my passions.
California State University Bakersfield
I have been involved with CSUB in some manner since its beginnings. I
remember when the idea of a 4-year college in Bakersfield was only in
the minds of a few. I was fortunate enough to have been a friend and
political confidant of Senator Walter Stiern and Assemblywoman Dorothy
Donohoe. Walter was our veterinarian and Dorothy was the Registrar of
Students at Kern County Union High School when I attended. They served
our county with determination for many years and together they were
primarily responsible in the plan for higher education in California.
They were wonderful, forward thinking leaders who believed in the power
and importance of higher education and I listened to them and became
involved in the cause.
We stretched the truth a little when we talked to Governor Pat Brown -
another wonderful leader - about the glowing future such a college
would have in Bakersfield and he signed the bill creating CSUB. In
later years when he saw me he would ask - "12,000 students yet?" But we
had our college.
It is now many years later, and I am still deeply involved. My
intention is to spend the rest of my life working for the advancement
of CSUB.

Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra
My wife Betty and I love music and regularly attend concerts of the
Bakersfield Symphony (for which I once played violin). Each concert
features 60 to 80 highly skilled, professional musicians performing
some of the world's finest music. Currently, I am president of the
board. I believe Bakersfield is sorely in need of a concert hall that
can be home to the orchestra and many other cultural events.
