COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
Preserving the Quality of Life In Our Community
Commitment to my community has been a very important part of my life. I feel fortunate to have been born and raised in Bakersfield because it was such a wonderful place to grow up. I received an excellent education in local schools that provided a strong foundation when I entered college and began my professional career. Because of this, I feel a responsibility to become involved in community affairs where my talents and interests can best help serve the future growth of Bakersfield.
In 1985, I asked to be appointed to the City of Bakersfield Planning Commission because I realized that if our community was to continue to be a city that focused on the family, land use planning would be an important issue. During my 8 years on the Planning Commission (two as chairman), I tried to ensure that Bakersfield would be viewed as a truly "All American City". I was deeply concerned that Bakersfield would not be subject to the type of urban sprawl that has destroyed many other similar communities. To that end, I made a commitment during my tenure on the Planning Commission, that new development would serve to enhance rather than detract from our quality of life. I am most proud of my involvement in establishing the Kern River Parkway Plan. This plan involved the creation of a bike path running along the Kern River from Hart Park to State Route 43. It is my belief that the visual arts play an important role in developing and enriching the quality of life for all people in our community. I currently serve on the Executive Board of the Bakersfield Museum of Art. The Museum's "Art Smart Program" reaches out to "at-risk" youth by providing them with an exciting and stimulating program which introduces these "at risk" students to the experience of the visual arts. The Art Smart Program has nearly 100 percent attendance and consequently these children's academic performance is also improved because they attend school more often. I have also served on the Board of Directors of Mother's Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). Drunk driving and its consequences can be prevented. Tackling it requires the involvement of every concerned citizen. That is why I volunteered to serve on the Board of this important organization. You can take action to make our community a healthier and safer place. Join the growing number of people across the nation to coordinate efforts to prevent drunk driving in their communities.
