Fireworks Safety

As we celebrate our Independence Day this July 4th, be mindful that every year many people are injured or killed by illegal fireworks. California allows fireworks categorized as safe and sane. Legal fireworks have passed strict guidelines to ensure they can be safely used without exploding or burning the person using them. Please ensure that you buy "safe and sane" fireworks that are clearly labeled with the manufacturer's name and come with instructions on how to use them. Purchasing fireworks such as M-80s or M-100s are not only illegal, but hazardous as well. They are dangerous explosives that can lead to serious injury and even death. Illegal explosives won't have the manufacturer's name on them and often don't have any printing on them. Don't purchase or use unlabeled fireworks. If you have any questions about what is legal, call your local police department, since firework laws can vary between city and county.

For issues about firework safety call the Fourth of July Safety Hotline:
(888) SAFE 4TH

For local Bakersfield and Kern County residents the following phone numbers are available regarding firework compliance:
Before July 1, report illegal fireworks by calling 324-6551 (outside the Bakersfield city limits) or 324-4542 (within the Bakersfield city limits).
Starting July 1 (and through July 4) report illegal fireworks between 7 p.m. and midnight by calling 868-6070.

Kern County & Bakersfield Fireworks Regulations

According to Kern County and Bakersfield fire departments, unless you are a licensed pyrotechnician, legal fireworks may only be used:

    Saturday: noon to 12:01 am
Sunday: 9:00 am to 12:01 am
Monday: 9:00 am to 12:01 am
Tuesday: 9:00 am to 12:30 am

In California, fireworks must have the state fire marshal's seal and slogan:
"Safe and Sane."
